The Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency has partnered with County Governments to roll out its 2nd Phase of Instructive trainings of the Product Development and Branding Programme.
The Agency’s Product Development and Branding Programme is an integrated programme aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of export products through quality product development and value addition to help enlarge Kenya’s supply base of exportable products. Selected enterprises and groups are facilitated to improve the quality of their products, packaging, expand their product range as well as meet regional and international market standards.
The programme target products such as Tea; Fresh Cut roses and buds; Fresh or dried Macadamia Nuts; Coffee; Manufactured tobacco and cigarettes; Goat Meat; Medicaments; Men Clothing; Fresh cut flowers and bud; Preserved leguminous vegetables; Fresh or dried avocadoes; Pineapple juice; Fresh or chilled vegetables; Iron and steel products; Food preparations; Salt; Preserved and canned pineapples; soap detergents; Women clothing and Leather products.
“The programme aims at facilitating product development and branding for export, targeting best enterprises from the listed categories that includes youth and women, from the 47 counties. The entrepreneurs are taken through a rigorous training where they are provided with instructions and practical guidelines on market trends and development of new demand-driven and market led products. The entrepreneurs will be required to utilize the available new tools and techniques for developing products that will be test marketed in the regional and/or international markets, said the Agency’s Chief Executive Officer Dr. Wilfred Marube.
To ensure the products have complied to required industry standards, the Agency has partnered with product development specialists from Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS); The University of Nairobi (UoN, School of Arts and Design); the Numerical Machining Complex (NMC) and Medium and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) to build relevant skill set for the selected entrepreneurs to ensure that their potential export products meet international standards.
“This programme comes at the right time when our farmers require access for various products to access the regional and international exports markets, said Mr. Gregory Naulikha, County Executive Committee (CEC) for Trade, Energy and Industrialization of Bungoma County.
The second phase of instructive trainings of the Product Development and Branding programme targets enterprises from 32 counties including, Bungoma, Busia, Kisumu Homa Bay, Kakamega, Siaya, Vihiga, Kericho, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Bomet, Narok, Meru, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Mombasa, Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Lamu and Tana River Counties.
The trainings are conducted in a manner that is interactive and engaging. Areas covered include value addition, opportunity identification, opportunity analysis in line with market information, product idea and concept generation, Inspiration sources, Trend watch, Design generation and development , diversification of product range, tips on Product development, selection of raw materials, practical tips among others.
