Soapstone

Craftsmen carry out this work using only simple tools. Large knives known as pangas are used to break large soapstone rocks into smaller pieces. Hammers, chisels, files, and smaller knives are reserved for more detailed work. Sometimes craftsmen immerse the soapstone in water, making it slightly softer and easier to carve. Once a piece is finished, it is given to the women who then clean and scrub it as they are culturally obligated to prepare the soapstone for use by the community.  They make sure it is then sanded and polished. Depending on the piece, the soapstone can also be dyed and painted in bright beautiful colors. Men are in charge of mining and carving while women are responsible for sanding, dyeing, painting, and polishing.

The painting exhibited at the  Kenya flower festival was brought to life by florist James Karanja of Eden Spectrum. This was the 2nd Edition of the Kenya Flower Festival taking place in Nairobi. With the theme “When Hope Blossoms”, a message to the flower enthusiasts in Kenya and across the World as different sectors battle with global Covid-19 pandemic. This event helps create positive appreciation of locally grown flowers; encourage local flower consumption; marketing and networking platform florists, flower farms, event planners, home and gardening planners, landscapers, local and international flower enthusiasts; as well as celebrate and recognize the art of floristry in Kenya and the impact of the industry in Kenya.

Ramisi

This is Ramisi sugar factory officially known as Kwale International Sugar Company in Msambweni constituency in Ramisi ward. This is the only sugar factory in the whole of coast region making it quite a novelty in the area. Kwale International Sugar Company Ltd (KISCOL) is a $200 million sugar processing facility incorporating 5,500 hectares of cultivated cane, a 3,000 tonnes-crushed-per-day sugar mill, an 18-megawatt bagasse-fired power plant and a sophisticated irrigation and water management system, resulting in affordable, locally grown sugar for the coast region and Kenya at large. The project, being one of the largest green field projects in Africa, will see the new facility sustain an impressive 30,000 litres Ethanol generation plant. The projected sugar production would help in meeting the deficit of Kenya's sugar consumption, which is approximately 200,000 tonnes per year.

Kesho Kutwa

The Kesho Kutwa exhibition is the second in a series of exhibitions the National Museums of Kenya is hosting and curating, as a precursor to the launch of the National Art Gallery of Kenya (NAGOK) project. This exhibition will provide a glimpse of what to expect once NAGOK is established and open to the public; - a combination of artworks from Kenya’s finest contemporary artists, in addition to historically significant pieces from National Museums of Kenya’s permanent collection.
The objective of the exhibition is two-fold. Firstly, Kesho Kutwa aims to chronologize the 50 plus year journey taken so far, towards the establishment of the National Art Gallery of Kenya. The journey has been long and difficult, fraught with all manner of challenges related to prioritization and goodwill. Kesho Kutwa – the day after tomorrow, heralds re-birth and renewal in a post-pandemic Kenya. The exhibition’s second objective is to bring together 5 accomplished Kenyan artists – Peter Ngugi, Beatrice Wanjiku, Michael Wafula, Peterson Kamwathi, and Dennis Muraguri - that have created new works – paintings and woodcut prints that capture the endearing human spirit of rebirth and renewal. The exhibition explores life in a post-pandemic existence. The artists respond in their own unique predictive narratives to what the day after tomorrow will look like.
