This week we celebrate  media personality, Janet Mbugua. The World Association for Sexual Health honoured her organisation, Inua Dada Foundation Trust, with an Excellence and Innovation in Sexuality Education Award.The award recognises initiatives that foster sustained and inclusive conversations that lead to creating safe spaces for enhancing access and learning about sexual health. The global organization, founded in 1978, recognizes, promotes, and advocates for sexual health and rights throughout the lifespan and throughout the world.

Founded by media personality and author Janet Mbugua, the Inua Dada foundation has reached at least 15 million people online since its inception. “I formed my foundation and to date I have been intentional about sounding the alarm necessary in the fight to end period poverty, equip allies with the tools necessary in advocating in their communities, approaching menstrual health management with inclusive programs and promoting empathy and tolerance in communities where taboos and discrimination against women and girls continue to lock many girls out of an education and prevent women from working with dignity.”

This week we feature Benson Muriu who is a ring maker.  Even before the Covid-19 pandemic forced people to work from home, Benson had already made this move years back. Benson gets his raw materials from old demonitised foreign and Kenyan coins to make bronze and silver rings that are of good quality. These old coins, including colonial-era leftovers, put food on his table, and also educate his 3 children.

 This week we celebrate Lady Justice Martha Koome, First Woman Chief Justice of Kenya. She has an impressive career spanning three decades after graduating in law from University of Nairobi in 1986 - The graduate started as a  legal associate in 1988, before founding her own law firm as managing partner in 1993. During her private practice, she became famous for her defence of human rights, representing political detainees during the regime of President Daniel arap Moi.

She was among the lawyers involved in the clamour in the 1980s to repeal Section 2A of the constitution which made the country a one-party state.

 This week we celebrate Dr. Edith Kamaru Kwoba of the Moi Teaching and referral hospital who went against all odds to make her dream of becoming a medical doctor come true. Lack of school fees led to her working in a morgue dressing bodies to get through medical school and help her family and pay school fees for her siblings. Other than medical practice she is involved in community projects to increase access to health care for all. Edith looks for opportunities to bring healthcare closer to the less fortunate.
